Morning flight to Pemba. Swahili lunch on a sandbank (depending on tides), then visit (by boat) to Panza Island and the magic five-topped Doom Palm. Overnight at Pemba Misali or Emerald Bay or similar, HB.
In the morning after breakfast drive to Chake Chake town, visit to the old market and the museum in the Old Fort. Later we visit traditional healers, where we will learn about Swahili medicines and watch a spiritual healing performance. En route visit to the Kidike Flying Fox Sanctuary to see the giant fruit-eating bats, which are endemic to Pemba Island. Overnight at your chosen accommodation, HB.
In the morning after breakfast pick-up for a traditional Pemba bullfighting competition. Bullfighting used to take place after the main harvest of either cloves or rice in village communities. Contrary to Spanish bullfighting, in Pemba the bull will be the celebrated winner and be spoilt and pampered by its masters! After the bullfight, traditional dances will be performed, such as Msewe, Boso, Gonga, and Kirumbizi. Lunch break at Chake Chake hotel, then visit to the ruins of the earliest settlements on Pemba Island.
